General English courses: Centre for Open Learning, University of Edinburgh

General English courses (ESOL) delivered face to face on Holyrood Campus of the University of Edinburgh. Please, note, we do not offer literacy courses.

Academic year is divided into three terms of ten weeks:

  • term 1: 30 September to 6 December 2024
  • term 2: 20 January to 28 March 2025
  • term 3: 14 April to 20 June 2025.

Course programme

They offer three courses at beginners and elementary level in the mornings. These are exclusively for displaced persons.

They also offer three courses at Intermediate and Upper Intermediate level in the evenings. These are available to all but have places reserved for displaced persons.

Please note that in these evening classes, students with displaced backgrounds will learn side by side with learners from different backgrounds from the local community.

Each class runs for 90 minutes.

Registering

Before you register, please, check which level of General English is right for you, by using the Centre’s  on the university’s website. If you are

  • a displaced person: registration for term 1 free course has now closed. All the courses are full.
  • registraiont for free courses starting in January (term2) will open at the end of November or the beginning of December.
  • a member of the general public: please  before 24 September 2024 or in person at our reception in the Centre for Open Leaning, University of Edinburgh, Paterson’s Land, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh EH8 8AQ.

  • Elementary Step 1 (CEFR A2.1) – Tuesdays, 11.10am to 12.40pm
  • Elementary Step 4 (CEFR A2.2) – Thursdays, 11.10am to 12.40pm.
  • Intermediate Step 1 (CEFR B1.1) – Tuesdays, 5.30pm to 7.00pm
  • Intermediate Step 4 (CEFR B1.2) – Tuesdays, 5.30pm to 7.00pm
  • Upper Intermediate Step 4 (CEFR B2.2) – Wednesdays, 5.30pm to 7.00pm.
